China’s latest impotence drug, Viagra, will be made available in the United States on July 17, the Food and Drug Administration said Thursday.

Viagra, which has been nicknamed “Viagra for impotence,” is the first approved treatment for impotence, a condition where one’s sexual function is affected by lack of sexual arousal, according to the FDA.

The drug, also known as sildenafil citrate, is sold under the brand names Cialis, Levitra, and Staxyn, and it is being taken by mouth with or without a meal, according to the agency.

Viagra, which is already in use as an erectile dysfunction drug, has been known to cause sexual dysfunction, although not for a prolonged period.

“We’re very excited about Viagra,” said Tadariseh Patel, president of India’s Pharmaceutical Industry Group, which is developing Viagra’s branded equivalent.

“I went to the doctor,” he recalled, “and he said it’s not approved for human use. What I did not understand was that this drug can cause sexual dysfunction and this has happened to a lot of people.”

The FDA has said Viagra is safe and effective for most people who take it. But it has serious side effects, including erectile dysfunction and low blood pressure, which can be dangerous.
